This treatment is the only permanent tooth restoration option available today, and can restore your healthy, beautiful smile for a lifetime. However, you may have also heard that some people aren’t initially good candidates for them, due to preexisting oral health conditions that could increase their risk of failure. Here’s a closer look at some of the reasons why you may not be ready to get dental implants just yet, and what you can do to correct this!

Dental Implant Success: Why Oral Health Matters

While it’s true that dental implants have an incredibly high success rate (between 95 and 98%, even ten years after placement), they still carry a small risk of failure. There are several reasons why this may occur. The two most common reasons are a condition called peri-implantitis which is a form of gum disease that attacks the ligaments of the gums, and failed osseointegration, where the dental implant doesn’t successfully fuse with the jawbone. Other reasons include things like poor oral hygiene, accidental injury, and excessive wear or damage from things like teeth grinding.

In addition to these conditions, dental implants can fail because the mouth was not healthy enough to support them in the first place. This is typically due to either poor jawbone density, or gum disease.

May the Odds Be Ever in Your Favor: How to Improve Your Chances for Dental Implant Success

If you presently have any oral health problems like gum disease or a weak jawbone due to osteoporosis or deterioration from missing teeth, your dentist may recommend one or more preliminary treatments before you qualify for dental implants. Here are a few procedures that could help get your mouth restoration ready!

Bone Grafting

Bone grafting uses granules of bone tissue implanted into weak areas of the jaw to rebuild its strength and density so it can support dental implants. If successful, your dentist may be able to attempt surgery once your mouth has healed.

Gum Disease Therapy

Because peri-implantitis is the leading cause of dental implant failure, having gums that are clear of gum disease is essential for success before treatment begins. Thus, your dentist may recommend one or more procedures designed to clear away dangerous oral bacteria and restore the health of your oral tissues, such as scaling and root planing.

Other Reasons You May Not Qualify for Dental Implants

In addition to pre-existing conditions like gum disease or poor jawbone density, there are sometimes other reasons you may not qualify for dental implants, including:

Age: Although there is no maximum age to get dental implants, you do need to be at least 18 years old to ensure your jawbone has finished growing. You may also be disqualified if you are not healthy enough to undergo a surgical procedure due to age.

Medical Conditions: In some cases, you may have a medical condition which could prevent you from a successful dental implant treatment, including diabetes, cancer, and some autoimmune illnesses. These are certainly not automatic disqualifications, but your dentist can determine this during your consultation so please be sure to disclose your full medical history.

Remember, dental implants are a life-changing treatment with an extremely high success rate, but they still carry a small risk of failure. Thus, to ensure that your prosthetics have the best possible odds for success, your dentist may recommend some preliminary treatments to get your mouth ready. Getting these procedures may add a little bit of time to your treatment plan, but they will be well worth the wait when you have a gorgeous, healthy, functional grin to show for it!

About Dr. Peters

Dr. Kimberly Peters earned her undergraduate degree at the University of Georgia and her DMD at the Medical College of Georgia (now Augusta University Dental College of Georgia).
