PROTECT YOUR GUM HEALTH

Do your gums regularly bleed after brushing and flossing? Does your oral tissue appear overly red in color, swollen, or tender to the touch? These are tell-tale signs of gum disease, an initially mild infection that can quickly worsen and threaten not just your smile, but your overall health as well.

At Seek & Smile Dentistry, our team takes gum disease very seriously, and we always thoroughly screen for it during regular checkups and cleanings. If we discover warning signs, therapy options are available to remove harmful bacteria from the mouth and revitalize your oral health. Please contact our Conyers office today if you have any questions, or if you’re ready to schedule a visit.

Scaling & Root Planning

Scaling and root planing can be thought as an in-depth cleaning that targets areas of the mouth that are regularly well-hidden from view. Dr. Seekand or Dr. Peters is likely to recommend this effective technique for cases of moderate gum disease. She will start with the “scaling” portion, which consists of removing bacteria from around and underneath the oral tissue with special instruments. Then, the “root planing” portion involves carefully removing rough spots from the tooth roots, which are targeted areas for plaque accumulation. As a result, gum tissue has a much better chance of successfully reattaching to the teeth.

Antibiotic Therapy

Antibiotic therapy is often used in combination with scaling and root planing in order to maximize its positive effects. Our practice uses ARESTIN, which is a medication that’s applied directly to the gum tissue instead of ingested orally. This antibiotic helps cleanse the gum tissue of any remaining harmful bacteria that were missed during the initial treatment.
